Mahmoud was elected the Mayor of the Children of Hebron in 2006 and he established a team of young journalists in Hebron. He has also represented Hebron several times abroad, most recently in New York City at the 2008 Summit of Global Teen Leaders. His main interests are in photojournalism and peace activism. Mahmoud sees journalism and media as ways to solve conflicts and he is interested in helping youth solve issues themselves and working towards peace. Mahmoud has also participated in such organizations as Seeds of Peace, Three Dot Dash and attended the World Economic Forum in 2009. He is currently a freelance journalist for Al Jazeera.
